Janna's school has started fundraising already. Monday we received five flyers for a book sale. It wasn't just Schoolastic, they now have one with electronics! Yes that's right, she could purchase an MP3, DS or various games.
Yesterday the school had a pep rally to get the children excited about selling. So we received the next wave of fund raising - cookies, candy & other non-perishables (wrapping paper, jewelery and such). There is a note outlining the prizes Janna can win if she sells a certain amount of items. There is also a letter explaining that we can just give cash and she could win the same prizes. It's complete with a chart showing what she can win, how much she needs for each level.
If that's not bad enough, there is a grand prize: the top three sellers will have tape placed all over their body, money will be laid on the floor where they will then roll around in it. Whatever sticks to them they keep.
Janna loves this idea, of course. She loves money, she loves to count it, to hold it and to put it straight in the bank. She's even been caught singing to her money. The only thing she doesn't like about money is parting with it.
Anyway, is it just me or is this a disturbing way to teach kids to be your selling machines? I don't know that we'll participate this year.

Fund raising

It sounds a little overkill to me!
We don't do fundraisers anymore, partly because the PTA here just asks families for a minimun donation that goes directly to the school in place of the children selling items. We don't like the idea of the fundraisers, because it ends up being such a hassel for us, and the school doesn't really benefit as much as it would if you gave a straight donation. Plus, like you, I don't like the way they hype the kids up to sell worthless crap for worthless crap prizes. I suggest, if you really want her to experience rolling around to scoop up money, make it a super goal for her to work towards that benefits you and her in a positive way...chores, school work, etc. I don't know, I'm just reaching here...
